Tianjin LED Energy Conservation Lighting Project

Several months ago I spent 2 days in Tianjin, China, working with the local government on economic development issues. Tianjin’s Governor, formerly head of the central bank, had initiated an experimental program allowing currency convertibility for local firms. He was also very interested in attracting private equity to the area. They have also built a bullet train, which reduces travel time between Beijing and Tianjin from 2 hours to 30 minutes. So, it is no surprise to see that Tianjin is also ahead of the pack on energy conservation as well. This article, Tianjin Economic Development Area Becomes First LED City in China, describes Tianjin’s new LED municipal lighting program.

Tianjin Economic Development Area Becomes First LED City in China. Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq:CREE), a maker of LED solid-state lighting components, announced that the Tianjin Economic Development Area (TEDA) in China has joined the LED City(tm) program, an international initiative to promote and deploy energy-efficient LED (light-emitting diode) lighting. TEDA is the first city area in China to join the rapidly growing consortium of cities in evaluating and deploying LED lighting technology across their municipal infrastructures.

Over the past two years, TEDA partnered with Tianjin Polytechnic University in a large, student-produced LED street lighting project. Twenty graduate students, directed by Professor Pingjuan Niu, Ph.D., designed, produced and installed approximately 1,500 LED streetlights. These innovative LED fixtures were installed more than a year ago to illuminate 15 kilometers along the university’s streets.

We need to do more in the US as well. They are not making any more dinosaurs.

One Response to Tianjin LED Energy Conservation Lighting Project

  1. Jim Allen says:

    John,

There are four LEDCities (http://www.ledcity.org/press-room/) in North America: Raleigh NC, Toronto, Ann Arbor MI and Austin TX. There is also an LED Workplace program (http://www.ledworkplace.org/).

These LED lighting projects have breakeven periods from 1-4 years, depending on cost factors. High out-of-pocket expenses to replace conventional bulbs and tubes leads to the shorter payback periods.
