The most interesting thing about this election day to me is not who wins. It is how fortunate we are to live in a country where we settle our differences using pieces of paper (sometimes, to be sure, ones with chads and dimples) instead of guns and car bombs. Most of the people in the world still do not enjoy that right.
I have been getting calls and emails from conservative friends who are distraught at Obama’s evident victory. I share many of their concerns about rising tax rates, about protectionism, and other policy issues. But I have been through enough of these to know that it’s easier for a new President to talk about change than make it happen in the brief time they are in office. America is going to be fine.
I’m not going to waste my energies whining about the election results. The people have spoken; we are going to move to the left for a time. I will work hard to convince the new government to adopt policies that make sense to me. And I will work hard to devise ways to protect our companies, our homes and our retirement savings against the policies that I believe to be destructive.
We have a lot of work to do to restore the economy and capital markets to where they need to be to support growth. Time to quit whining and get back to work.
