Next time you have a bad day, just be thankful you are not Pres. Trump’s trade negotiator.
Monday: Steve Mnuchin and Bob Lighthizer take the red eye to Shanghai to reboot the US/China trade talks that blew up in May.
Tuesday: First meeting with the Chinese team. (Hopefully no sea slug appetizer).
Wednesday: Second (half) day of meetings. Fly home.
Thursday morning: trade team said we made good progress and that there will be further talks in Washington in September.
Thursday afternoon: Pres. Trump launches a surprise salvo of Tweets, reversing everything the trade team said, announcing he will impose 10% tariffs on an additional $300 billion in Chinese products, destroying the credibility of our trade team in the eyes of their Chinese counterparts. Stock market drops like a rock.
And it’s still only Thursday afternoon. Can’t wait to see what happens when the employment report comes out on Friday.
